CONSERVATIVE TREATMENTS

If bacterial infection already resulted in decay, the tooth will need treatment. Depending on the size of the cavity, some form of filling will be needed. If the infection has spread into the pulp, root canal treatment will become necessary if the tooth is to be saved.

Once bacteria are present in the tooth we will need to remove them and replace the lost tooth tissue in some way. Many filling options are available, from tiny tunnel restorations to traditional fillings through laboratory made replacement parts. Our aim is to stop the bacterial spread, restore form and function as well as aesthetics.

If the bacterial infection reaches the middle of the tooth where the pulp is found, root canal treatment will be required. Unlike the enamel and dentine the pulp contains live tissues, blood vessels, and nerves. These will die in the presence of bacteria thereby providing food for their growth.  At this time typically the toothache subsides. Eventually bacteria will reach the tip of the root where they can now enter the surrounding bone via a small hole. At this time pain returns and a course of antibiotic may be prescribed. However, that will not eliminate the bacteria inside the root canals as there is no fresh blood supply to deliver the medicine there, and if not removed by root canal treatment, the infection will return.

Just as no two faces are the same, neither are two root canals. We have instruments and techniques to overcome these challenges: electronic apex locator, rotary files and ultrasonic irrigation device are utilised to clean and disinfect the area. The clean root canal system is then filled with a warm root filling material that flows into the irregular spaces before solidifying there.

Root canal treatment is normally done in two visits. Medicated dressing is left inside the canals between visits which continue to exert its effects for days. However, if no active infection is present, then root canal treatment may be done in one visit.
