Although in some cases it is possible to place a crown onto a newly placed implant, usually a 3-5 month long healing period is necessary. This allows bone to grow onto the surface of the implant.

When a tooth is lost, the root supporting part of the jaw bone is lost as well. The human body is amazing because rather than extend energy in maintaining unused bone, it will simply resorb it. This however, will result in a sunken facial appearance.  That is why timely implant replacement is advised. Once resorbed, bone regenerating procedures may become necessary first.

Other than the undesirable aesthetic consequences, tooth loss can disrupt the unity of the dental arch. Teeth fulfil their function best by working side by side with each other in unison. If one member is lost, the neighbouring teeth will begin to tilt, drift, and migrate, creating further dental problems.

Implants can be used to support individual crowns, hold bridges, or even a full arch of artificial teeth (one of which is the so called “all on 4”).
